Whether they came to scope out fresh faces in fashion, get a picture with host Kaley Cuoco from the Big Bang Theory or sample the “Polymer Punch” specialty cocktails – everyone who joined Plastics Makes it Possble at Gen Art’s “Fresh Faces in Fashion” event on October 29, 2009 learned a lot and left wanting more.

Fashion blogger and P.M.I.P. guest Laurie Brucker wrote of the event, “The bubbly and very charming Kaley Cuoco, from the CBS Sitcom The Big Bang Theory hosted the evening. And as we awaited the show, she educated us in the relationship between plastics and fashion. What most people don’t realize is that plastics are everywhere, especially in our closets. From buttons, to zippers, to spandex, to the ever popular sequin and even to the soles of our shoes, plastics are a major part of our fashion industry.” Read the rest of her post here.

Fellow blogger Micky Flores took some great shots, including this one of artist Michael Dee creating his plastic art. Visit his blog to see more.

For those of you who can’t get enough of plastics in fashion, Plastic Makes it Possible host Kaley Cuoco announced a nationwide fashion design competition challenging new and established designers to create two dynamic womenswear looks made from fabrics that include plastic-based fibers such as chiffon, rayon, nylon and more.

As Brucker writes, “Plastics make it Possible is taking a stand and working hard to come up with more creative ideas to maintain the relationship of plastics in fashion. Their goal is to help create stylish, creative and useful innovations for our fashionable futures. All this in mind Plastics Make it Possible is launching a nation wide design competition. Designers are challenged to create two womenswear looks made solely out of plastic, recycled plastic and/or plastic-based materials. Each will submit their work to the Genart website and we can all go and vote for our favorite designs! Don’t worry, I promise to follow up on this so you too can see plastic design innovation of the future!”

The submitted looks will be posted to Gen Art’s online community where designers can create their own profile page and upload their designs as well as network with others in the designer community.

We invite you to visit www.discover.genart.org and vote for your favorite looks!

The Fashion Blog (also P.M.I.P. guests) blogged on the completion saying, “GENART just opened today their PLASTICS MAKE IT POSSIBLE competition, I posted the link to the full rules and instructions to enter the competition. You have until Dec. 1 to enter (only open to US residents)…Good luck if you decide to enter!!” You can read the rest of the post here, and see the official rules here.

The winner of the contest will receive a $10,000 prize and a runway show at Gen Art’s Fresh Faces event at Winter 2010 New York Fashion Week. All interested designers can submit their creations on www.discover.genart.org. All entries must be submitted by December 1 and public voting runs through December 15. The winner will be notified on December 21.

It was an exciting night for Plastics Make it Possible, a program of the American Chemistry Council. The venue was beautiful, innovative plastic fashions were all over the runway, and our host, Kaley Cuoco from the Big Bang Theory, was the belle of the ball! Here are a few of our favorite shots from the Red Carpet and the Plastic Lounge — don’t miss Kaley’s hip plastic ring!

On the way in Kaley flashed her designer plastic purse:

A girl’s gotta put her feet up and the Plastic Possible lounge featured bubble sofas, Ghost Chairs and fun toys:

Looks like everyone had a great time at Gen Art’s “Fresh Faces in Fashion” event, kicking off LA Rock Fashion Week, sponsored by Plastics Make it Possible!

Fashion and plastic have more in common that you might think; both make it possible to express and (re)invent ourselves in new and unexpected ways. Plastic materials inspire designers’ imaginations and allow artists to create pieces that are cutting-edge, on trend, chic, affordable, and even eco-friendly. From Paris to Milan to New York, plastics are showing up in a variety of innovative and unusual ways including faux fur vests, funky jewelry, 10-inch platform shoes and even sequined mini-dresses made from recycled plastic bottles. This year, plastic and fashion are making the love affair official as the two come together to present the 12th annual “Fresh Faces in Fashion” event at LA Rock Fashion week.

Gen Art’s fashion events have proven to be a successful launch pad for big names, including Zac Posen, Phillip Lim (Development), Rebecca Taylor, and many more. Rock Media, known for producing events in Miami and New York City, will add rock & roll flavor to Gen Art’s 12th annual fashion project. Plastics Make it PossibleSM will be there to put the stretch, shine and structure in every innovative piece of art that walks the runway. This year’s show will run October 29-30 and will take place in Peterson Automotive Museum in Los Angeles to accommodate increased demand for tickets. Five emerging designers will be featured on the runway: Leyendecker, Valerj Pobega, Seneca Rising, Rory Beca and MG Black.

Additionally, actress and fashion-o-phile Kaley Cuoco of The Big Bang Theory will be on hand to kick off the night’s festivities and announce a nationwide fashion design competition. New and established designers will create dynamic womenswear looks made out of plastic, recycled plastic and/or plastic-based fabrics such as chiffon, rayon, nylon and more, to win a $10,000 prize as well as the opportunity to showcase a mini-collection of 10 looks featuring plastics at Gen Art’s show during New York Fashion Week in February 2010. Each innovative look will be posted to Gen Art’s online community where designers can create their own profile page and upload their designs as well as network with others in the fashion community.

Entering its 15th year, the Gen Art “Fresh Faces in Fashion” show, presented by Plastics Make it PossibleSM, traditionally draws over 1,200 attendees. A limited number of tickets are available to fashion enthusiasts for Fresh Faces in Fashion Los Angeles with prices ranging from $55-85. For more information on the event, visit:

ARLINGTON, VA (October, 27, 2009) –This year plastic has become the newest trend in couture. From Paris to Milan to New York, plastics are showing up in a variety of innovative and unusual ways on the runway including funky jewelry, 10-inch platform shoes and even sequined mini-dresses made from recycled plastic bottles. Celebrating this up-and-coming trend, Plastics Make it PossibleSM, sponsored by the plastics industries of the American Chemistry Council, will present the Gen Art “Fresh Faces in Fashion” Los Angeles Show on October 29, hosted by actress Kaley Cuoco, star of the popular CBS sitcom, The Big Bang Theory.

“Plastics and couture might not seem like an obvious fit, but the fact is that plastics have played a very large role in fashion for decades,” said Steve Russell, vice president, Plastics Division of the American Chemistry Council. “Without plastic, we wouldn’t have faux fur, and skinny jeans wouldn’t have their stretch. Plastics also provide women with comfortable, smooth support under their favorite looks. We’re thrilled to partner with Gen Art to highlight how plastics inspire designers’ imaginations and allow artists to create pieces that are cutting-edge, on trend, chic, affordable, and even eco-friendly.”

The “Fresh Faces in Fashion” show is the first in a series of events sponsored by Plastics Make it PossibleSM as part of a new partnership with Gen Art aimed at showcasing the creative use of plastics in fashion design and the ways in which up-and-coming designers are applying them to today’s – and tomorrow’s – trends. Whether it’s polyester, nylon, spandex or Lycra®, the fashion and design world has embraced these plastic materials.

At the show Kaley Cuoco will announce a nationwide fashion design competition challenging new and established designers to create two dynamic womenswear looks made from fabrics that include plastic-based fibers such as chiffon, rayon, nylon and more.

These looks will be posted to Gen Art’s online community where designers can create their own profile page and upload their designs as well as network with others in the designer community. Consumers can go to www.discover.genart.org and vote for their favorite looks. The winner of the contest will receive a $10,000 prize and a runway show at Gen Art’s Fresh Faces event at Winter 2010 New York Fashion Week.

Beginning October 29, interested designers can submit their creations on www.discover.genart.org. All entries must be submitted by December 1 and public voting runs through December 15. The winner will be notified on December 21.
“In my business, I need to stay on top of trends and I love to support up-and-coming designers wherever possible,” said Kaley Cuoco, who is currently starring as Penny in the third season of The Big Bang Theory. “I’m very excited to work with Plastics Make it PossibleSM as they challenge designers to create innovative looks using plastics and recycled plastic fabrics.”

The Gen Art “Fresh Faces in Fashion” show, presented by Plastics Make it PossibleSM, will take place on opening night of Rock Fashion Week in Los Angeles, October 29, at the impressive Peterson Automotive Museum. Entering its 15th year, the show traditionally draws over 1,200 attendees and has launched the careers of leading designers such as: Zac Posen, Rebecca Taylor, Shoshanna and Milly. A star-studded after-party will take place in a specially designed plastic-themed lounge after the show.

“We are thrilled to be working with Plastics Make it PossibleSM on this multi-faceted design partnership that will showcase and benefit emerging fashion designers, “ said Ian Gerard, CEO of Gen Art. “We hope to help make consumers aware of the incredible variety of innovative plastic-based design fibers that most of us wear daily.”
