Whether it’s polyester, nylon, spandex or Lycra®, the fashion and design world has embraced plastic-based materials. Plastics Make it PossibleSM, a new program sponsored by the plastics industries of the American Chemistry Council, and Gen Art have embarked on a new partnership recognizing innovations in fashion and design made possible by plastics.   In conjunction with the annual Gen Art “Fresh Faces in Fashion” show at Rock Fashion Week in Los Angeles, Plastics Make it PossibleSM will host an event on October 29 showcasing cutting-edge designers and artists, and how plastics are shaping the future of fashion and design. Entering its 15th year, the “Fresh Faces in Fashion” program’s shows (New York, Miami, Chicago and Los Angeles) each draw 700-1,000 attendees, and the program has launched the careers of some of today’s top designers. The event will take place at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Hollywood, followed by a star-studded after-party in a specially designed plastic-themed lounge.

At the “Fresh Faces in Fashion” LA Show, Plastics Make it PossibleSM  will announce a nationwide design competition that challenges new and established designers to create two womenswear looks made predominantly from plastic-based materials and fibers, including some recycled plastics. These looks will be posted to Gen Art’s online community where designers can create their own profile page, upload designs, and network with others in the design community. Once posted, Gen Art supporters and the general public can vote for their favorite designs through December 15.  The winner of the contest will receive a $10,000 stipend to create a collection that will debut at Gen Art’s “The New Garde” presentation taking place in February during Winter 2010 New York Fashion Week.
